Centrally
located in Australia's premium wine
district of Coonawarra, Punters Corner is
a boutique winery and home of the 2000
Jimmy Watson Trophy.
This
website will give you an insight into our
special corner of the world, while also
giving plenty of information regarding the
special qualities of the terra rossa
vineyard soil and the people behind the
wine. As pioneers of the plantation
forestry industry in Australia, David and
Robert are passionate in their desire for
a sustainable and carbon neutral future.
Over the past 20 years they (and their
associated entities) have planted over
100,00 hectares of plantations as well as
several large scale horticulture projects.
All these
projects are at the forefront of technical
and sustainable excellence; demonstrating
in a practical manner our genuine
commitment to a sustainable and carbon
neutral future. The origins of Punters
Corner began in 1988 when David Muir
and Robert Hance commenced vineyard
operations with the purchase and planting
of sixteen hectares of vineyard on V&A
Lane. Since then the vineyard area has
expanded considerably with the development
of a further three vineyards including the
Cellar Door block which is situated on the
Riddoch Highway.
In 1996,
our colleagues at Balnaves constructed an
innovative winery and engaged the services
of our talented winemaker Peter Bissell.
Today, with Pete Balnaves managing our
vineyards and Pete Bissell making our
wines, we seek to achieve the highest
standards of viticulture and wine making
techniques.
Late 1999
saw the opening of our award winning
Punters Corner Retreat accommodation
centre, located on our V&A Lane
vineyard. Offering both indoor and outdoor
dining areas, four bedrooms with ensuite
bathrooms and modern kitchen, Punters
Corner Retreat won the 2001 Royal
Australian Institute of Architects South
Australian Award of Merit. It also won the
SA Great Tourism Award for best small
business of 2001.
Punters
Corner wines are classically
Australian in style and represent the best
grapes available from our vineyards in any
year. Our vineyards currently produce some
twelve hundred and fifty tonnes of fruit
per annum of which one hundred and fifty
tonnes are selected to produce premium
table wine under our Punters Corner
label.
Punters
Corner produces a Chardonnay, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Shiraz and the Triple Crown
(Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz & Merlot
blend). Our reserve wines, only made in
outstanding years, include the award
winning 'Spartacus' Reserve Shiraz and the
new 'Sovereign' Reserve
Cabernet.
The
highlight of our last thirteen years has
undoubtedly been winning the 2000 Jimmy
Watson Trophy with our 1999 Spartacus
Reserve Shiraz. This trophy, awarded for
the most outstanding one-year-old red wine
is undoubtedly the most sought after wine
award in Australia.
Punters
Corner has been fortunate in receiving
a number of awards this year. Our 1999
Cabernet received third place in an
Australia versus California wine show
down. The 1999 Spartacus Reserve Shiraz
was selected by leading U.S. magazine, Bon
Appetite, as one of the one hundred best
wines available in the U.S. and The
Australian Financial Review selected our
1999 Cabernet Sauvignon as one of the
twenty best wines available in Australia.
